Telegrams - A Relic of the Past
Hearing that the telegram has gone the way of the horse and buggy makes me think of a funny homeschool story. Way back when our eldest, now 24, was in the second grade, we were doing a unit on Samuel F. B. Morse, inventor of the telegraph. We live in a rather small town, and the Western Union office was at the time located in the vacuum cleaner repair shop. We went in to get some vacuum cleaner bags, and being the resourceful homeschool mom, I decided to turn it into a field trip. I worked up my courage and asked the proprietress, “Would it be possible for us to hear a little bit of Morse Code?”
She tried to hide a smile and answered, “We do that all by computer now.”
Ouch.
